A smartphone with a clean enclosure and a startup screen is not necessarily usable by a new owner. Account restrictions can remain relevant after erasure. The buying check therefore needs to establish whether ordinary setup works without another person’s credentials. A promise to unlock it later does not make it usable now.

Distinguish the different restrictions

A screen lock protects access to a configured device. Activation or device-protection features can require confirmation of a previously connected account after a reset. Carrier restrictions and organisation management are additional possibilities. They need different explanations and should not be bundled into one broad claim that the phone is unlocked.

Before shipping, ask whether previous account bindings have been removed correctly. A photograph of the welcome screen is insufficient evidence. Apple Activation Lock can prevent use, while Android device protection can require confirmation of the earlier account after a factory reset. Neither issue is established by exterior condition.

Follow the ordinary setup route

With a suitable internet connection, check whether the device activates normally. Necessary release steps should be performed by the legitimate previous user or responsible seller. If the phone asks for an unknown account or another organisation’s login, stop and record exactly what it displays rather than proceeding experimentally.

Do not request another person’s password for permanent use or rely on bypass services. The aim is a properly released device, not access under a previous identity. Transfer the full contents of your main phone only after basic setup and condition checks are resolved, so you do not complicate an unresolved purchase with personal data.

Have unresolved bindings addressed before purchase

At an in-person handover, the seller can perform necessary release actions through their own account. Check setup again afterwards. For an online purchase, send the provider a precise description of the screen and agree its intended handling process for the problem.

Keep purchase documents, but do not treat a receipt as an automatic promise that the manufacturer can remove every restriction. Requirements differ. If normal release cannot be established, an essential characteristic for ordinary use is missing. A particularly low price cannot compensate for a device that remains unusable through its proper setup process.

Common questions

Does a factory reset remove every restriction?

No. Protection features may request a previously associated account after reset. Correct account release is a separate step.

Are carrier locks and activation locks the same?

No. One concerns possible network-provider restrictions; the other concerns activation or account association. Check both as appropriate for the device.
