A sofa can look exactly the right size in a photograph and still fail to fit through the stairwell. Assess its condition and logistics together. Ask for overall dimensions, removable components and the source of product measurements. With modular sofas, the actual sections and connecting parts must support the arrangement you want rather than merely look similar.
Try each seat separately
At a viewing, sit in several positions and compare behaviour without jumping or extreme loading. A softer favourite seat is an observation, not a definite diagnosis of springs or frame. Ask about previous repairs and describe where noise or movement occurs.
Inspect accessible seams, zips and visible undersides. Loose back and seat cushions should be complete. Do not cut a sewn dust cover open for inspection. If a mechanism, storage compartment or sofa bed is included, have its intended operation shown without loading it.
Assess covers and odours realistically
Record stains, worn fabric and odours separately. Fragrance spray can mask perception without establishing cleaning. Ask about pets, smoking and damp storage if these matter to you. Answers do not replace your viewing but provide context.
Removable does not automatically mean machine washable. IKEA care information directs owners to the instructions for the particular cover. Material, backing and combinations of different fabrics may limit the permitted process. Research suitable cleaning and possible replacement covers before buying.
Record moving dimensions too
Measure doors, landings, lift and difficult turns. Ask for the smallest transport dimensions if feet or modules can be removed as instructed. Door width alone does not show whether a long sofa can turn around the corner immediately beyond it.
Plan helpers, protection and every required connector. Label sections during dismantling and keep fittings secured together. Include delivery and cleaning costs in the price. A sofa that would enter only through an unresolved dismantling plan is not yet a practical purchase.
Common questions
Does a new cover guarantee an as-new sofa?
No. Frame, padding, mechanisms and odour sources remain separate issues. New fabric describes only part of the condition.
Can I simply add padding to a soft spot?
That depends on construction and cause. Have access and work assessed before assuming a cheap straightforward repair.
